Lawless and seven other Greenpeace activists admitted a charge in Auckland District Court of being unlawfully on a ship after they spent 77 hours on a 53m-high tower they scaled aboard the Noble Discoverer at Port Taranaki in February. The action was aimed at protesting Shell’s planned exploration for oil in the Arctic. They were initially charged with burglary but pleaded guilty when the lesser charge of being unlawfully on a ship was laid.


Convictions were not formally entered at the request of lawyer Ron Mansfield so they can keep all options open for sentencing, options which could include a discharge without conviction. The others to enter guilty pleas were Raoni Hammer, Mike Buchanan, Shayne Comino, Viv Hadlow, Shai Naides, Zach Penman and Ilai Amir. Ms Hadlow says the prospect of extreme frontier oil drilling is also a threat for New Zealand.
