The star quarterback stated that he hopes when the time comes, the NFL would be welcoming to an out gay player.
“I mean, it's the 21st Century,” said the Colts QB, spurring the Andrew Luck gay teammate story. “And I know I would have absolutely no problem with it. I hope no one would treat him any differently than any straight player. You know, no special treatment, he's another guy.”
“It's not our business, you know [the] sexual preference of people. So, you know, I hope if someone is thinking about it, that they do come out as gay and are a professional football player and it makes them happy and it makes their life easier then I think they should do it.”
While Luck may have been speaking on his hopes of welcoming a gay teammate for himself, he also said that he also has aspirations of his fellow NFL teammates (and likely the league as a whole) being positive of a gay player in professional sports as well.
“If it does come, I mean, I'd be disappointed if there was a negative reaction among players,” he said.
Yard Barker added that the Andrew Luck gay teammate story is a positive one, as Luck was also reported saying that having an out player in the NFL would hopefully still be treated as “just one … of the guys” on his team.
Andrew Luck’s statement comes only several weeks after Charles Barkley revealed he had gay players he knew in the NBA as well, and that it similarly wasn’t an issue having gay players in professional sports in today’s day and age.
