Bridgeport Substitute Teacher Slammed Student in Head with Basketball

Bridgeport substitute teacher slammed student in head with basketball - A substitute teacher is out of a job after intentionally hitting a student on the head with a ball at Bridgeport Middle School.

The school’s principal said the incident occurred during a gym class Billy Garvin, Jr, 66, was teaching.

“The students were playing dodgeball and it got out of control,” said principal Travis Whisenant.

The incident was caught on video when a student pulled out his cell phone and hit record.

Whisenant says students and Garvin reported the incident within minutes, and that Garvin was asked to leave.

Garvin admitted to the incident in a phone interview and said students hit him in the face several times with a ball.

The mother of the 14-year-old hit by Garvin is upset.

“How could he think that was okay to do?” she said.

It’s not the first time Billy Garvin, Sr. has been kicked out of a local school district, either.

Garvin had an inappropriate conversation with students at an Alvord ISD school last year and was asked not to come back.

If Garvin is charged in the Bridgeport incident he could get up to two years of jail and a $4,000 fine.
